Chapter 10

Alira nodded as tears streamed freely down her cheeks.

“Yes?” he asked as he tried to swallow past the lump in his throat.

“Yes!” she replied enthusiastically and threw her arms around his neck.

Marcus couldn’t believe his ears! She said yes! He had been so afraid that she would reject him. He fell back pulling her with him, cushioning her landing with his body. Marcus couldn’t believe how happy she was. He couldn’t believe how happy he was! This was happening.

Alira pulled away from him as a blush rose to color her cheeks. Marcus pulled her back against him and captured her mouth with his own, scattering all of the thoughts in her head until there was nothing but Marcus there fanning the flames within her. The intensity of their kiss was almost too much to take. When the kiss broke, they were both breathing heavily. Alira laid her head down on his chest while his arms slid easily around her waist holding her in place against him.

“Shall we see if this thing fits?” he asked her softly talking about the ring. Without a word, Alira pushed away from him into a sitting position. Marcus curled up to sit. Alira shivered as she imagined watching the muscles of his stomach flex with the movement. He picked the ring up off the floor and reached for her hand. Slowly, he slid the band over her finger. It was a perfect fit. The stones glittered and sparkled in the light of the fire as they both admired it.

“Marcus, it’s so beautiful but where on earth did you get it?” she asked curiously as she wiggled her finger, fascinated by how the light bounced off the stone. Marcus leaned back on his hand and looked away from her. Alira froze.

“Was this – was this Carmen’s?”

“No! No, it wasn’t Carmen’s. Would you believe me if I told you that I bought it about four months ago?” Marcus asked, cautiously refusing to look directly at her. Alira narrowed her eyes.

Four months ago, she had gone shopping with him looking for a birthday gift for Charlotte because Karma had bailed on helping him find something. Karma had volunteered Alira to go with him since she still needed to find a gift at the time too. He had been a complete grump the entire afternoon. They had gone into a jewelry store over on Ninth Avenue to pick up a necklace being repaired that Karma had asked them to pick up while they were out. She wouldn’t have been off work in time to go before the store closed. While Marcus had waited at the counter for the employee to bring the necklace out, Alira had browsed the rings. She was particularly drawn to the sapphires. The way they sparkled in the lights reminded her of the stars in the night sky and the peace that she felt looking up. Marcus had gruffly dragged her out of the store once he had Karma’s necklace and she had forgotten about the ring.
